Description:This degree program of study for Diploma Registered Practical Nurses prepares students for the challenges and opportunities of practice as Registered Nurses. Students enter the McMaster-Mohawk-Conestoga BScN program in year two, building on the foundational knowledge and skills acquired in their diploma nursing programs. Students are integrated into the BScN program through classroom and clinical learning experiences designed to expand their nursing knowledge while supporting their transition to a problem-based learning curriculum. In addition to providing a solid scientific nursing base, this degree program emphasizes problem solving, team skills, critical thinking, research-informed practice, and leadership competencies. The curriculum is planned for three academic years of full-time study. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will be awarded the BScN degree by McMaster University.

Admission Requirements

Test Scores:
  • International English Language Testing System (academic or immigration) or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Internet Based) or Canadian Academic English Language Assessment

Applicants with transcripts from institutions where the language of instruction is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency with a minimum test score on one of the following language proficiency tests or equivalent scores from another internationally recognized English language test: IELTS overall band of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0, TOEFL iBT 88, CAEL 70, no sub-test band score less than 60, PTE Academic 58, or Conestoga English Language Test (CELT) Band 6.

You may be exempted from this requirement if you meet one of the following requirements:

- Attended, in full-time academic studies, an accredited secondary school (high school) or post-secondary college in an English-speaking country for at least three years, OR

- Attended, in full-time academic studies, an accredited English medium secondary school (high school) for at least three years, OR

- Attended, in full-time academic studies, an accredited English medium university for at least one year, OR

- Resided in an English-speaking country for at least four years immediately prior to application to Conestoga.

It is your responsibility to make all arrangements regarding the writing of any English language proficiency test and to have the official score report forwarded to the Office of the Registrar in a timely manner.

Additional Admission Requirements:
    Applicants must provide evidence of registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario; possess a current CNO annual registration payment card or have written the Practical Nurses Registration Examination by May 31 of the year of application.

    A diploma in practical nursing (two-year program) from an Ontario College of Applied Arts and Technology, or equivalent, with a minimum overall average of 75% or higher. (Higher averages are often required for admission due to competition for available spaces in the program.) Applicants who have satisfactorily completed a diploma practical nurse program but who have not achieved the required cumulative average may become academically eligible by completing at least twelve units (two full-courses or four half-courses) of university degree credit with a cumulative average of at least B (75%). This work can be in any subject area and will be used for transfer credit once the applicant is admitted to the Post-Diploma Practical Nurse to B.Sc.N. program. Note: Applicants who possess a certificate in practical nursing should seek upgrading to diploma practical nurse at a College of Applied Arts and Technology.

    Please note, for applicants starting the program in Fall 2020, the following courses will be required in addition to the above admission requirements:

    - English (ENG4U) or equivalent (COMM1085 and COMM1200)

    - One (1) Grade 12 Mathematics course from the following: Advanced Functions (MHF4U) OR Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U) OR Mathematics of Data Management (MDM4U) or equivalent (MATH1177 and MATH1185)
